From mention to revenue: tracking ROI on social listening

If your social listening tool can't draw a credible line from "we found this mention" to "we drove this revenue," you're flying blind. Most reporting in this space is theater — impressions, sentiment scores, share-of-voice charts that look great in board decks and don't predict any business outcome.

This is how to actually track ROI on a multi-platform engagement program: which metrics matter, which are vanity, and how to set up attribution that survives a CFO conversation.

The vanity metrics to skip

Three numbers that show up in every social-listening dashboard and predict nothing:

  • Mentions found. Bigger numbers feel like progress, but volume is mostly noise. A team that finds 10,000 mentions and engages with 50 produces the same outcome as a team that finds 200 and engages with 50, except the first team paid for the firehose.
  • Sentiment score. Aggregate sentiment is a derivative of how your AI classifies mentions, not a real measure of brand health. Two brands with identical sentiment scores can have wildly different business positions. Track specific complaints, not averaged feelings.
  • Share of voice. Useful at the macro market-research level, useless for operational decisions. Knowing you have 12% share of voice in a category doesn't tell you what to do tomorrow.

Drop these from weekly reporting. Keep them, if at all, for quarterly retros where the trend over time is the point.

The metrics that predict revenue

Four numbers that, if they trend up, indicate the program is working.

1. Reply survival rate

Of all the replies you publish, what percentage are still live and unedited 7 days later? Anything below 80% means moderators are removing your content — your voice is reading as spam, even if not auto-flagged. Anything above 95% sustained over weeks means you have a healthy account presence and your replies are doing the work.

This is the leading indicator that everything else depends on. A program with poor survival rate cannot drive revenue because the content isn't even visible.

2. Engagement rate per published reply

Average upvotes, replies, or thread depth per reply you publish. Don't average — bucket. Replies in the 90th percentile of engagement are 10-50x the median; understanding what made those replies different is the most valuable analytical question the program faces.

Track per platform. Reddit upvotes, LinkedIn comment count, Quora upvotes and views. Each platform's currency is different.

3. Profile-level conversion signals

People who engage with your content and then check the profile/account behind it are warm leads. Track:

  • Reddit profile visits (visible in u/yourname stats if logged in)
  • LinkedIn profile views, especially "Who viewed your profile" with ICP-fit titles
  • Click-throughs from Quora to your linked website

This is the bridge metric — between content and pipeline. If you're publishing well-reaching content but profile visits are flat, the content isn't doing the conversion job.

4. Direct attribution

Trackable links carrying your domain UTM parameters. The flow:

  • Sign-up form captures referrer or UTM
  • "How did you hear about us?" question on first session
  • CRM tags account with first-touch and last-touch sources
  • Revenue attribution ties closed-won deals back to original source

The single most underused tactic: ask new sign-ups directly. Even unstructured "how did you find us?" with free-text answers reveals patterns no analytics tool will. "Saw your comment on r/SaaS" is gold.

The attribution model that works

Last-click attribution is wrong for community-driven channels because the signup almost always happens through a search query or direct visit, not a click on the original Reddit comment. Use a hybrid:

  1. First-touch source, captured by referrer + UTM + self-reported. This identifies the discovery channel.
  2. Last-click source, the technical attribution at conversion.
  3. Branded search lift, the indirect signal. Community channels often produce branded searches that look like "direct" or "organic" but actually originated in a Reddit thread.

Reconcile monthly. If your CRM shows 30 deals last quarter sourced as "direct" but your branded search volume tripled in the months your Reddit program ran heavy, it's not direct — it's social-driven branded search.

The time horizon problem

Native engagement compounds slowly. A quality Reddit reply ranks in Google four months later. A LinkedIn post drives a conversation that produces a deal six months out. A Quora answer keeps generating traffic for two years.

This breaks short-cycle ROI calculations. If you measure the Q1 program by Q1 closed deals, the program looks like a money pit. The deals it generated are closing in Q3. By Q3 you'd have shut it down.

The solution: separate "engagement program" from "deal attribution." Track engagement program by leading indicators (survival, engagement, profile visits, mentions of brand in target audiences). Track deal attribution from close back to first-touch with multi-month windows. Don't expect the two to line up in the same calendar month.

Cost of program

The fully loaded cost of a multi-platform engagement program at moderate scale:

  • Tooling: $79-199/month for a full-featured platform handling monitoring, AI scoring, drafting
  • Human review time: 5-10 hours/week per workspace for approval and brand oversight
  • Quality writer assistance (optional): $50-150/month at moderate volume if drafts are escalated to humans
  • Platform API costs: $0 for Reddit/LinkedIn, $100+/month for X if used

Total: roughly $1,000-2,500/month for a real program with one person managing it. Compared to the cost of a single SDR (~$10k/month fully loaded), the unit economics are favorable if it produces even 1-2 closed deals per quarter.

The ROI calculation that holds up

Build the spreadsheet with these columns:

  • Number of replies published (per platform, per month)
  • Cost per reply (program total / replies published)
  • Profile visits attributable to engagement (referrer data)
  • Sign-ups attributable (first-touch + self-reported)
  • Sign-up to opportunity conversion (CRM)
  • Opportunity to close conversion (CRM)
  • Average deal size

The bottom number is revenue per reply. For a B2B SaaS at $5k average ACV with 20% sign-up-to-customer rate, a single closed deal pays for ~6 months of program. Most programs producing meaningful engagement are profitable by month 4-5.

The test for whether to continue

If, after six months, your program shows:

  • Reply survival rate above 80%
  • Steady or growing branded search volume
  • Profile visits trending up
  • At least one deal traceable to community engagement

...continue and double down. The compounding favors patience.

If after six months none of these are true, the program isn't working — but the diagnosis isn't always "kill it." More often the issues are: keywords too broad, voice too generic, ICP not aligned to where the conversations are happening, or human review skipping too many drafts. Diagnose specifically before retiring the channel.

The summary

Stop measuring what feels measurable. Start measuring what predicts business outcome. Reply survival, engagement rate, profile visits, direct + branded-search attribution. Track on long horizons because the channel compounds slowly. Reconcile monthly. Don't kill programs in their first quarter — but do kill them if six months produces no signal.

The teams that build durable advantage in community engagement are the ones with this exact discipline. Everything else is theater.
